Star of Sciences Multidisciplinary Journal acknowledges the progressive incorporation of artificial intelligence (AI) tools, including generative AI systems and large language models, into research, writing, and scholarly communication processes. In order to safeguard scientific integrity, editorial transparency, and the credibility of the academic record, the journal establishes clear guidelines for the ethical, responsible, and transparent use of AI and automated technologies by authors, reviewers, and editors.
The use of artificial intelligence tools does not replace human responsibility under any circumstances. Authors, reviewers, and members of the editorial team retain full responsibility for the content produced, the evaluations conducted, and the editorial decisions made at every stage of the publication process.
For authors
Authors may use artificial intelligence tools solely for legitimate and limited purposes, such as language editing, grammar correction, stylistic improvement, formatting assistance, or enhancing clarity and readability of the manuscript. Any use of AI that goes beyond basic editorial assistance must be explicitly disclosed within the manuscript, either in the Acknowledgments section or through a specific transparency statement.
Authors are fully responsible for verifying the accuracy, coherence, originality, and reliability of any content generated or assisted by AI tools. The use of such technologies does not exempt authors from accountability for errors, fabricated content, inaccurate statements, missing citations, or improper referencing practices.
Generative AI tools do not meet the criteria for academic authorship and must not be listed as authors or co-authors. AI systems cannot assume intellectual, scientific, or ethical responsibility for scholarly work.
Content generated or assisted by AI must not include fabricated references, false data, manipulated images, or invented results. Authors must ensure that all cited sources are authentic, verifiable, and properly referenced. AI tools must not be cited as primary academic sources.
When AI is used for data analysis, image generation, simulations, modeling, figure creation, or other substantive research processes, such use must be clearly and transparently described in the Methodology section, providing sufficient detail to ensure transparency and reproducibility. Any ethical, legal, or copyright implications arising from the use of AI remain the sole responsibility of the authors.
Failure to disclose the use of AI tools, or inappropriate use that compromises scientific integrity, may be considered a serious breach of editorial ethics and may result in manuscript rejection, publication of corrections, or article retraction.
For reviewers and editors
Peer reviewers and editors must not use generative AI tools to substantially draft, generate, or compose review reports, editorial evaluations, or publication decisions. This restriction is intended to protect manuscript confidentiality, prevent unauthorized processing of sensitive information, and preserve academic rigor in the evaluation process.
In exceptional cases, AI tools may be used only for minor editorial support, such as language refinement of reviewers’ own comments, provided that confidential manuscript content is not uploaded to external systems and that human academic judgment remains central to the evaluation.
Editorial decisions must be based exclusively on human scholarly judgment, grounded in disciplinary expertise, ethical responsibility, and critical analysis. AI tools must not be used to replace or automate editorial decision-making processes.
Use of automated tools by the journal
The journal may employ automated tools for administrative purposes and to protect academic integrity, including plagiarism detection systems, textual similarity analysis, reference verification, and image screening technologies. These tools operate under human supervision, and their outputs are assessed and interpreted by qualified editorial staff.
The use of automated technologies is complementary and does not replace editorial judgment. Any observations derived from such tools are evaluated contextually and on a case-by-case basis, ensuring that authors are given the opportunity to provide clarifications when necessary.
Alignment with international standards
This policy aligns with international guidelines concerning the responsible use of artificial intelligence in academic publishing, including principles promoted by Elsevier regarding transparency, human accountability, authorship integrity, and responsible disclosure of AI use in scientific research.
